Meet Big Mama!

Big Mama was brought in by the NYPD after being found with multiple puncture wounds, likely from another animal. Despite everything she's been through, she has remained incredibly affectionate, social, and resilient. Her bite wounds have fully healed, and she's now ready to leave shelter life behind for a loving forever home.

Big Mama would do best in a loving home that can continue supporting her recovery while giving her the stability and affection she clearly craves. She enjoys being around people and would thrive with a family that appreciates a sweet, attention seeking companion.

Good with Other Pets?

Big Mama has shown neutral behavior around other dogs in the shelter setting. Slow, thoughtful introductions are recommended as she settles into a new environment.

No young children under 5 are recommended due to some resource guarding around toys.

Things to Know

Big Mama is a soft, wiggly girl who loves attention and happily leans into affection from handlers. She walks nicely on leash, greets people warmly, and has shown a very social personality despite her difficult past. She does appear to value certain toys and may hover over them, so continued positive reinforcement training around sharing and trading items will help her succeed. Because one of her injuries was likely a bite wound, her future adopter will need to complete a little extra paperwork and continue with a few follow up vet visits this year, but she has been recovering wonderfully and her wounds are fully healed.

Big Mama may have had a rough start, but her favorite thing now seems to be soaking up love and giving full body wiggles to everyone she meets.

A volunteer writes: At 80 pounds, Big Mama has earned her adorable name. Found stray with 11 punctures from bites of an unknown origin, Big Mama has recovered well at the shelter. In spite of whatever happened before she arrived, her notes and interactions with staff all indicate she's an affectionate, social and resilient girl. She's also a toy loving girl, and once we give her one, it doesn't leave her side. Or more specifically her paws, as she perfectly positions and holds it to chew and squeak at us. Big Mama attempts to roll over onto her side a few times, and maybe it's her mobility or the heat, but she abandons her attempts to give us that glorious belly to rub.

Because of those bites, Big Mama will need a little extra paperwork to take home, but the process isn't daunting and shouldn't deter anyone. Big Mama is ready to go home today and is available to level 2 homes - so ones with just a bit of experience.
