Mercury was surrendered to the care center as a stray, so we have no history on his behavior in a home environment. Mercury has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, and has shown highly fearful behavior during his stay. He has tolerated handling, though during his medical exam was tense, tail tucked, and whale eyeing. During his handling assessment, he was also tense and shaking, avoidant of handlers, and consistently sought exit from the room. Due to his fearful behavior, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide a period of decompression, any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based), and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
