Randy Donut is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Randy Donut has shown significant kennel stress and high arousal, including heavy panting, hyper-salivation, and persistent leash biting. He has also displayed kennel fighting and lunging toward other dogs when exiting his kennel. Randy Donut responds well to enrichment and has shown the ability to settle with toys, snuffle mats, treats, and pattern games but is struggling to acclimate in the care center. Medically, Randy Donut is apparently healthy.
My boroughbreaker writes: When I arrived at Randy Donut's kennel he immediately made his presence known and I quickly discovered it was all for show. I leashed him easily with a treat, and he happily trotted along by my side, unaware of the adventure that awaited him: the beach.
As soon as Randy saw the shoreline he eagerly pulled towards the sandy beach and dipped his paws in the water. He didn't seem to mind the chill in the air and pranced in and out trying to catch the waves as they splashed him. The beach wasn't too busy but we did walk past other people with their dogs. We maintained a safe distance but allowed Randy to watch while reinforcing his good behavior with treats. He seemed interested in the other dogs, observed them, and continued walking, looking back while they were still in view. He did not lunge or bark at any of the dogs that he saw. He tried to make friends with a few picnickers along our path and received quiet admiration for his handsome looks.
Despite his excitement about being at the beach, Randy Donut couldn't have been a more stellar pup. He walked beautifully on-leash, engaged playfully with me and my partner, and checked in frequently for treats and lots of praise for being the best boy. Experiencing the beach through Randy's eyes made it all that much more special and I hope he gets to enjoy endless long walks along the shore with his forever family.
