Jollof was originally surrendered into care as a stray, so his past history in a home environment was unknown at the time. His finder did report that he displayed guarding behaviors with food. During his stay in care, Jollof was mostly social with staff and handlers. He was adopted but has been surrendered back into care after a few months with his previous adopter due to moving to a new home that had a large number of other people and animals. His previous adopter described Jollof as a very energetic and affectionate dog who enjoys car rides, is not picky about his food or treats, and enjoys quality time with his family. Jollof's previous owner did report similar guarding behaviors, but he would escalate to snapping or attempting to bite if his food was touched. There was a bite incident when the owner's cousin attempted to take food from Jollof that had fallen onto the floor. The bite broke the skin and left a puncture to their hand. Jollof has remained loose and wiggly with handlers and staff during his stay. But he did escalate to the aforementioned behaviors during the toy portion. Due to these behaviors reported in the previous homes and during his stay in care, we recommend that Jollof be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope rescue partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

A volunteer writes: Jollof is a BABY and he's all about the TOYS! Thankfully, we have plenty to present to him and he is happy with each and every one. It's the simplest things that offer these dogs the most pleasure and sometimes it's a good reminder of why we are there. To give them a break from their kennel and allow them to relax for a few minutes. Jollof alternates between running about the yard with his treasures and soliciting petting and attention from us. We don't have much information about his past, but he has a big scar on his back and was found by good Samaritans wandering the street alone. Still, he's the sweetest little man around and we can't wait until he's scooped up and in a loving home where he belongs!
