James is at risk due to behavior concerns. During his time in the care center, James has been observed to be doing kennel stress-related behaviors such as heavily panting, finger-painting feces, and flipping his water bucket in his kennel. He has been noted to jump up to handlers' faces persistently occasionally; this follows after he leash bites as well. He has been observed to be responsive when called, allows petting, is receptive to treats, and follows verbal cues. Medically, James is apparently healthy.

Meet James!

James is a sweet, affectionate guy who was found tied up with another dog and is now ready for a much brighter chapter. He is moderately social, approaches people readily, and loves treats and attention. He can get a little excited and jumpy when greeting people, but underneath all that enthusiasm is a dog who really enjoys being with his people.

My Ideal Home

James would love a family who can give him plenty of opportunities to explore, sniff, and enjoy the world around him. He'll benefit from daily walks, enrichment, and positive training to help him channel his enthusiasm into good manners.

Good with Other Pets?

James came into care with another dog, but we have limited history about their relationship. During a recent dog introduction, he was more interested in keeping to himself and gave the other dog plenty of space. Any future introductions should be slow and supervised.

Good with Kids?

James would do best in a home without very young children under 5. He can be excitable and jumpy when he's happy to see someone, so older kids who understand how to give him space and help him keep his paws on the floor may be a better fit.

Things to Know

James has mild leash pulling and can get excited about treats, but he has shown that he can be a wonderful walking buddy. He follows his handler readily, tolerates handling, and even knows how to give up his toys when asked. He would love a family who can help him polish his manners while making sure he gets plenty of chances to be his happy, affectionate self.

James was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with! We were out from around 11am to 3pm, walking nearly the entire time from the East River to the Hudson, and he loved exploring the parks along the way. He had excellent leash manners, occasionally tugging when he was interested in a person, and he kept nicely to himself around other dogs. He loved his pup cup, and while he wasn't interested in sitting on cue, whenever his buddy sat down, James would put his front paws up for a hug. He even liked standing up and placing his paws on his buddy when they stopped, showing just how much he enjoys being close to his people.
