Santi is a loving, intelligent, high-energy girl who is searching for a foster or forever home by August 1 due to her foster family's unexpected medical circumstances. At 7–8 years young, Santi still has plenty of pep in her step and an even bigger heart to share.
She's fully house-trained and crate-trained, incredibly food motivated, and highly trainable. Whether she's showing off her tricks for treats or learning something new, Santi is eager to please and loves having a job to do.
When playtime rolls around, Santi is all in! Her favorite activities include tug-of-war, fetch, squeaky toys, and chewing on cow or water buffalo ears. She also loves enrichment, especially a frozen Kong stuffed with peanut butter and treats. And if there's a pup cup involved? Even better—she's a big fan of whipped cream!
Santi walks beautifully on a loose leash and generally ignores other dogs while out and about. She also loves car rides and road trips, making her an excellent adventure buddy. At home, she's a total cuddle bug who wants nothing more than to be close to her people.
At night, Santi happily sleeps in her crate without a fuss. During the day, though, she can have some separation anxiety and would thrive in a home where someone is around most of the time. She makes the perfect work-from-home companion and is currently perfecting her "executive assistant" skills—she's excellent at supervising Zoom calls, reminding you to take snack breaks, and ensuring you never work alone. 😉
Santi's journey hasn't been easy, but her resilience is truly inspiring. She was originally found as a stray on a beach and brought to NYC ACC. After being adopted, she was heartbreakingly returned a year later and ended up back in the shelter. Thankfully, Pawsome Squad stepped in, and Santi has flourished in foster care over the past three months.
Before leaving the shelter, veterinarians feared Santi might have degenerative myelopathy ("doggie ALS") and could require hospice care. Thankfully, a neurology consultation at AMC New York revealed much better news. Santi does nothave degenerative myelopathy. Instead, she has a mid-back spinal issue that affects her hind limb coordination, along with osteoarthritis in her ankles and elbows.
She is currently comfortable, happy, and pain-free thanks to medications and joint supplements. The rescue is also hoping to begin rehabilitation and physical therapy to further improve her mobility and keep her feeling her best.
Santi has already overcome so much. Now, all she needs is someone willing to give her the love, stability, and companionship she deserves. In return, you'll get an affectionate, loyal best friend who will happily accompany you on adventures, make you laugh every day, and curl up beside you at the end of every evening.
